The Ell:
Ell, an obsolete unit of measurement – in the English, covering 45inches. Formerly, the standard unit of measurement for cloth, the Ell fell victim to the transient nature of language, and the standardisation of measurement with the growth of international trade. Falling out of fashion, and out of use, the Ell now acts as a relic of a by-gone era, a metal rod on a museum wall.
This Ell:
Ell Silk, is an artist, writer, thinker of things and maker of non-things. Based in Hastings East Sussex, their practice explores the interconnectedness of memory and materiality, working on periphery of experience and existence. Refusing to be limited by medium, Ell’s work remains focused on curiosity and expression, over form. Never in fashion, this Ell has no-where to fall out of, and relishes the freedom that comes with being un-standardisable.
